An odd-named auto manufacturer burst onto the English automotive scene back in 1889. The Alldays & Onions first offered cars in their line-up as far back as 1898 which was 9 years after their founding. However, Alldays & Onions was not new to the engineering industry as the company was actually formed by the merging of two separate engineering firms. The original Alldays Engineering firm was established back in 1720 and the Onions Engineering company was founded in 1650 which gave the combined experience of the two companies a leading edge in the development of automobiles in turn of the 20th century England.
When their plant first opened in Birmingham, they produced the normal items that were commonplace at that time in England but by 1903, they were already producing motorcycles under the name of Alldays-Matchless which they would continue until 1915 when the motorcycle manufacturing would spin off and form its own name known as Allon before it would shut down in 1927.
Using a 4 horsepower De Dion motor, the first car from the Alldays & Onions Company was actually a quadricycle that was steered using a wheel rather than handlebars. This line would continue well up into the start of the First World War when Alldays & Onions would participate in the war effort and develop 5 ton trucks for the military.
It was perhaps in 1905 that Alldays & Onions would make their first commercial success when they developed their own 1600 cc engine with a vertical side valve setup. This engine would quickly become immensely popular especially amongst hill climbing racers. The company would continue on with a great number of successful engines and eventually the purchase of the Enfield Autocar Company in 1908.
Over the next couple decades, Alldays & Onions would continue to produce a number of popular automobile lines for the general public. However, by 1925, after merging with the company they bought back in 1908; Enfield. The Alldays & Onions began to release their cars under the name of Enfield-Alladays which would eventually lead to the downfall of the company.
Alldays & Onions would eventually close their doors and cease all automotive manufacturing in 1925. This would not put an end to the name though as they have today become a popular collectors item amongst enthusiasts across Europe.
