The Hyosung Motors & Machinery Inc. which was founded in 1978 by Wan-Ki Hong began producing Suzuki motorcycles under license explicitly for the Korean market. By 1986, Hyosung had established their own R&D center which was located in Hamamatsu, Japan, and by the following year, Hyosung began their mass production of a design of their own. In 1988, Hyosung was the official motorcycle supplier of the 1988 Summer Olympics which were located in Seoul that year.

In 2003, Hyosung Motors was released from the grips of their parent company, the Hyosung Group and is today, its own corporate entity. Hyosung has also recently expanded from the traditional business of simple yet efficient bikes for commuting workers of Koreas into the highly competitive market of recreational vehicles which also includes the addition of models that feature a larger engine displacement which at current goes up to 650 cc and expansion into more developed markets such as Australia, Northern Europe, and the United States. Hyosung also currently has plans to release a new 1,000 cc motorcycle.
